Multi-award-winning author Robert N. I recently returned to Shell Point Community’s Academy to attend

Guest Lecturer, Robert N. Macomber, gave his 5th talk on Polynesian History at The Tribby in the Shell Point Community on "The Barefoot Marines of Samoa" and it was a fantastic conclusion to a fascinating series! Much appreciation goes to former Marine, Bart Sharp [the tall guy next to Macomber], who arranged for some very special guests of honor, as seen on stage. These active duty Marines are from Cape Coral FL's recruiting office led by their Gunnery Sergeant NCOIC. They hadn't known about the Samoan Marine Battalion in WWII---but they do now!

A tremendous surprise unfolded at The Tribby during my final talk on 
Polynesian History, which was about “The Barefoot Marines of Samoa” and 
it was due to the wonderful effort by former U.S. Marine & Shell Point resident,

Also in Fredericksburg, TX is the Museum of the Pacific War, where author Robert N. Macomber found this 3" high-angle AA gun on display. 
Also in Fredericksburg, TX is the Museum of the Pacific War,
where I saw this 3″ high-angle AA gun on display, which was never
very effective and most were phased out by 1944 on frontline warships,
replaced by much more effective Bofors 40mm and Oerlikon 20mm guns.
Nonetheless, some old ships in the USN STILL 
had an old 3″ gun (1920s technology) in the 1960s!!

The prize given by me to Don is a copy of the 1862 recruiting poster
for the American Civil War, calling for volunteers to join the
47th Pennsylvania Infantry (of Allentown) which was heading
to Key West, FL. In addition to garrisoning Ft. Taylor and Key West,
the 47th had an excellent combat record in SC and throughout Florida.
Elements of the 47th served at Useppa Island, Ft. Myers, and Ft. Jefferson.
Many were killed, wounded, or died of Yellow Fever; many unsung heroes.

named El Morro, and in the late 1800s, Peter Wake

The Naval Undersea Museum has actual remnants of a Howell Torpedo which was found by Navy dolphins in 2013 ~ amazing! When in Keyport, WA, Robert N. Macomber visited the Naval Undersea Museum and saw the display on the Howell Torpedo, which he's written about in his Honor Series of historic thrillers.

I’ve written about the Howell Torpedo from 1890, and here is a
display on it at the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, WA.
They even had remnants of one found in 2013 by Navy dolphins.

As a 17-yr old skipper, I was one of the founding members 48 very long years ago. Later on, I was commodore. Lots of great memories afloat and ashore!

Had 3 intense days at Fort Rucker (Alabama) – yes, the famous
 “Mother Rucker” – legendary home of U.S. Army aviation
and the Army’s Warrant Officer Career College. Warrant officers
are the brain trust of the Army, technical and operational experts
who are relied upon for sage advice by colonels and generals.
I had the extreme privilege of spending quality time with fifty senior
warrant officers of the Army (20-35 yrs service!) from the 3 components
(National Guard, Reserves & Regular) at their college at Rucker.
 On my final day there, I was humbled by a request for a photo op with the
Commandant, Colonel Kelly Hines [left], and the Deputy Commandant,
Chief  Warrant Officer (CW5) John Howze. Let me tell you, these guys are
the real deal. Theodore Roosevelt would recognize them as kindred souls
!

believe it or not, I found one at the Dade Battlefield
Historic State Park in Bushnell, FL.
It’s an interesting state park, where Major Dade
[US Army] was defeated in the late 1830s
by Seminole warriors, located on CR 603
between I-75 & Hwy 301 in Sumter County.
This 80-acre treasure is a picturesque example
of old Florida. Definitely worth a visit!
