Topic: “The U.S. Navy’s Anti-Slavery Patrol 1842-1862”
From 1807 onward, it was illegal to import slaves into the United States from Africa.
In this lecture you’ll learn about the illegal slave trade in Africa, the Caribbean, and Florida.
You’ll also learn the little-known story of brave American naval sailors who tried from 1842 to 1862
to stop this horrific traffic in misery, and Florida’s surprising role in that effort.

Topic: “Slavery in Florida during the Civil War 1860-1865”
Florida had one of the highest slave-to-whites ratios of any state in 1860.
This talk centers on where the plantations were in FL, what life was like at them,
and what happened to the slaves as the war progressed. You’ll also learn about an ante-bellum plantation
on this coast where a significant event unfolded in June 1865,
a place we’ll visit on Feb. 27th, so sign up for that if it isn’t already sold out.

Topic: “From Slaves to Citizens 1865-1872”
This is the remarkable story of how Pres. Abraham Lincoln’s dream came true
even after his assassination, his vision to engage a massive U.S. Army effort
to assimilate the newly freed slaves into society with their new privileges and responsibilities.
You’ll learn about what went right in Florida, what failed, the considerable forces
who tried to thwart it all, and the legacy of that effort to this day.
