THE HISTORICAL NOVEL SOCIETY
NORTH AMERICAN CONFERENCE [HNS2019]
WELCOMES PRESENTER ROBERT N. MACOMBER

Saturday June 22, 2019 [8-9am]
** in the Baltimore 3 Room **

Topic: “Revolution In Paradise: The Perils and Joys of Researching
American Historical Novels About Revolution Inside Communist Cuba”
Program Description: Typically, when people think of “revolution” and Cuba, 1959 images of
Fidel Castro come to mind. But there is a significant twist in Robert N. Macomber’s presentation,
for it refers to the original revolution in Cuba, a thirty-year (1868-1898) struggle by Cuban patriots
for independence from Spain. When people think of ‘paradise’ and Cuba, sounds of upbeat music
while riding in classic convertibles often presents a more modern image, but only after spending
over a decade of research trips on this island gem, can the fullest understanding be revealed.
Mr. Macomber will share his unique experiences, sometimes daunting, sometimes hilarious!

The Value of Research Workshop with co-presenter Kathryn Hall-Knight
My Topic: “Researching Around the World”
In addition to researching the facts of your writing project, location research can provide the crucial
flavor of the locale for your project. There is no substitute for going there and immersing yourself in the sights, smells, tastes, sounds and textures of the culture and place.
This will be a fascinating look at how location research can
make a story more vivid and memorable for both the writer and the reader!

Saturday, August 3, 2019
11:30am-12:30pm Pre-Lunch Presentation

We are the writers. Hollywood makes movies about people like us. Secretly, many people want to be us.  So enjoy this remarkable ride, for it will take you to experiences and friendships and places you’d never  have otherwise. I’ll share some practical tips on how to stay organized, productive, and innovative while expanding connections with your colleagues, your readers, and prospective fans.
